Founded by Marcelo Gleiser, a world-renowned theoretical physicist and public intellectual, the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy and professor of physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College, and his wife Kari Gleiser Ph.D. in Clinical Psychotherapy from Boston University and a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of complex trauma and dissociation.
The Island of Knowledge was projected to offer leadership retreats, think tanks, and exclusive courses. The retreats, designed for exclusive senior leadership groups, are immersive experiential offsites informed by cutting-edge systemic, regenerative thinking for a new leadership attuned to a fast-changing world.
Located in the heart of Tuscany, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance in the 13th century, the Island of Knowledge takes place at the Oratorio di Barottoli, a historical site on the hills above Monteroni d’Arbia.
Today, the property belongs to Marcelo Gleiser and his family. With profound respect for its illustrious history, the fully restored church has been repurposed to become a state-of-the-art retreat and conference site, while preserving its original beauty and works of art.
The visual inspiration came from the central idea behind Marcelo's homonymous book, The Island of Knowledge, in which he stated: "As the Island of Knowledge grows,so do the shores ofour ignorance – the boundary between the known and unknown. Learning more about the world doesn’t lead to a point closer to a final destination — whose existence is nothing but a hopeful assumption anyways — but to more questions and mysteries. The more we know, the more exposed we are to our ignorance, and the more we know to ask." Translated into visuals, the project symbol reveals the connection between the two islands, forming both a chalice and an hourglass, two symbols rich in history and meaning, which dialogue with the ever-increasing need to share and celebrate true knowledge in times of great planetary urgency.
